Course Summary:

Proactive Stress Management: The Six Steps to Stress Prevention

Most employees either don’t have the time to practice stress management or if they do it at all they do it reactively – after a really bad day. In this program , you will learn six steps to you’re your clients manage stress proactively, either before a stressful event happens or in real time, while their stress is happening.

These six steps focus on 1. Connecting the dots between your client’s symptoms of stress and their sources of stress. 2. Using problem solving to eliminate unnecessary stress. 3. Using cognitive restructuring to change their stressful thinking patterns on the fly. 4. Using present-moment awareness to turn everyday activities like walking, eating, listening and taking a shower into restorative mindfulness moments. 5. Creating a daily resilience routine, to prevent the build-up of stress. And 6., seeking social support for difficult times like a health or financial crisis.

Here are the six steps in more detail:

Step 1: Raising awareness

Recognize the symptoms of stress including rapid heartbeat, cold hands, dry mouth, perspiration, and muscle tension and figure out, in real time, what is causing them.

Step 2: Problem-solving

Look at the problems identified in step one and do some creative problem-solving to eliminate, reduce or prevent them from happening again.

Step 3: Cognitive Restructuring

For issues that don’t go away with problem-solving: Understand how one’s thinking is a MAJOR source of stress and how you can change that thinking on the fly while your stress is happening.

Step 4: Mindfulness

Understand the therapeutic value of staying in the present moment and using it to create relaxing moments throughout one’s day, without having to take any time out to do so.

Step 5: Resilience

Establish a resilience routine by creating a short set of daily activities including meditation, yoga, and/or exercise that helps PREVENT the build-up of stress throughout one’s day.

Step 6: Social Support

Seek out opportunities to build a support network, throughout one’s day, by connecting with the people in specific, small ways that enhance one’s well-being and theirs.
