CEAP FAQs
Who is eligible to become a CEAP?
To earn the CEAP® Credential, CEAP® candidates must meet eligibility criteria under one of the following four CEAP® Pathways:
- Masters with Experience
- No Masters with Experience
- Masters with No Experience
- No Bachelors/No Masters and No Experience
What does the CEAP Certification Course look like?
The CEAP® Certification course is comprised of five learning modules each with thirty end of module assessments questions which covers the required three knowledge domains for the EA professional. The five modules are presented in PowerPoint fashion with voice-overs and opportunities to click on articles and videos to enhance learning. It is a self-paced and a candidate has the option of completing either the CEAP® Certification Course (For candidates within the US) or the CEAP® Global Certification Course (For candidates outside the US)
What is the difference between the CEAP Certification Course and the CEAP Global Certification Course?
The only difference between the two is the target audience. The CEAP® Certification Course is for candidates within the US as it includes specific US regulations and terminologies whilst the CEAP® Global Certification Course does not include such US specific regulations and terminologies.
Except for the difference noted above, both certification courses (CEAP® and CEAP® Global) presents twenty hours of content knowledge relevant to EA practice within a global perspective and includes interactive exercises, videos, selected readings, case studies, test your knowledge and end of module assessments questions. Essential EAP components, history of EAPs, policy issues along with relevant legal issues, diversity, EAP clinical assessment, EAPs around the world, marketing, training supervision, outcome measures, account management and the future of EAPs will be covered within the course's five learning modules. Each learning module has its respective end-of-module assessment which contains thirty (30) randomized multiple-choice questions to check your knowledge of the respective domains. Assessment questions are based on domain knowledge and not on the exact content covered in the learning modules.
What if I signed up for the CEAP instead of the CEAP Global/vice versa?
With the exception of some US specific content and regulations in the CEAP® Certification course, both certificate courses are very similar in its content design and layout. If you are not comfortable moving forward with the option you have signed up for then contact r.byrne@eapassn.org.
How can I verify if an individual holds the CEAP credential?
EAPA will only verify a CEAP® credentialed holder for employment purposes. To do this, contact r.byrne@eapassn.org.
Does the CEAP certification course include an exam/test?
Yes. It includes end of module assessment questions. There are 150 scored items spread over the five learning modules (30 items per module) developed and validated based on the three EA Domains. A pass of 80% or higher for each end of module assessment must be obtained.
What is the Domain Knowledge?
The modules include Domains I, II, and III, and are broken down as follows:
- Module One - EAP Fundamentals (covers Domain I)
- Module Two - Compliance and Ethics (covers Domain I)
- Module Three - EAP Assessment and Risk Management (covers Domains I, II, III)
- Module Four - Organizational Services and Optional EAP Support (covers Domain II)
- Module Five - Program Management and Applying Innovation to the Field (covers Domain I)
What would be considered 'accepted EAP work experience'?
Accepted EAP Work Experience Includes:
- Employment (and/or internship) by a work organization’s internal employee assistance program or by an external EAP vendor; or
- Affiliation by contract with an EAP to provide services to individual or organizational EAP clients.
What would be considered 'EA service delivery'?
EA service delivery includes direct EAP client contact hours, case management activities, EAP client follow-up, clinical consultation focused on EAP clients, workplace crisis response services, on-site services such as benefit fairs, delivering training on behalf of an EAP, and other EAP-specific activities.
Is there are timeframe in which to complete the Certification Course?
The CEAP® certification course must be completed within the 3-year candidacy period. Learning Modules are self-paced and can be started at any time within the candidacy but once started it must be completed within 90 days of initial start. Each learning module averages 4 hours to complete plus 45 minutes to complete each end of module assessment.
Why is Mentorship being included?
The EA profession has a rich history of professionals that have done some amazing work at the intersection of life and work. But no one can be a fully competent EA professional without some connections to those who have come before them. As a result, mentorship is designed to help both CEAP® candidates and existing CEAP® holders:
- Broaden experience and perspective
- Navigate the complexity of EA practice
- Develop a habit of consultation
- Help with practice questions
- Avoid common mistakes in early practice
- Utilize knowledge transfer.
Who are the mentors?
Mentors are current CEAP® holders with EA knowledge, experience, and desire to guide the learning and development of others entering the profession. Current CEAP® holders are encouraged to share their knowledge and experience with those entering the profession through volunteering to serve as a mentor and endorsing the CEAP® with others contemplating entry into the field. If you are currently a CEAP® holder and would like to offer your time and expertise as a mentor, please contact the EACC.
Frequently Asked Questions about Elevating Ethical Awareness:
At the Portland Expo in October 2023, Chapter Presidents were introduced to a change to the Ethics requirement for CEAP renewals. Since then, details of this change have
been finalized by the EACC and EAPA Boards of Directors. This document outlines those
specifics and frequently asked questions.
What hasn’t changed?
60 hours of PDHs are required every 3 years to renew a CEAP.
Of those 60 hours, 2 hours must be in Ethics.
What’s the new requirement?
EAPA’s Elevating Ethical Awareness (EEA) course is required to fulfill the 2 hours of Ethics.
When does this take effect?
January 1, 2025. All CEAP renewals on or after this date are subject to the new requirement.
Why the change?
Two reasons:
1) To maintain the integrity and consistency of the ethics training that all CEAPs receive.
Unlike other ethics trainings, EEA is focused on the ethical issues that apply specifically to the
EA profession. Shifting this required ethics course “in-house” ensures that each renewal cycle,
all CEAPs receive EA-specific ethics training supported by the EACC, the policy-making body
that oversees the CEAP certification.
The Employee Assistance Certification Commission (EACC) researched and developed the
original EEA course and revised both the Code of Ethics and the Elevating Ethical Awareness
course in 2023. The EACC Ethics Committee will approve any subsequent updates to the material to ensure a consistent training in EA ethics is disseminated to all CEAPs going forward.
2) To raise needed revenue for EAPA.
As chapter presidents learned from EAPA’s CEO last year, EAPA’s financial circumstances last
summer hit a crisis point, where staff were furloughed and EAPA was close to closing its doors.
The registration fees collected by bringing EEA “in-house” will generate needed revenue for
EAPA.
What does the EEA course cost?
$100 for EAPA members
$200 for non-EAPA members
