Filling a Gap in Workplace Violence Prevention: The Value of Employee Assistance Programs in Threat Assessment and Management

 

What is Presented?

This interactive workshop will explore and discuss the best practices of behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM) through the context of EAPs. Attention will be given to the unique functional role that EAPs can play in the organizational task of preventing targeted workplace violence. A specific case study will be explored as an example of the operational value that an internal EAP can provide throughout the course of a threat assessment and management process.

Who Presents?

About the Presenter: Bryan McNutt, PhD, CEAP

Dr. Bryan McNutt, PhD, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LP), a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), and a Certified Employee Assistance Counselor (CEAP). Dr. McNutt currently serves as an internal employee assistance psychologist and consultant with the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where he specializes in providing clinical counseling services for faculty and staff members of the UCSD community, as well as critical incident debriefings, management consultations, and behavioral threat assessment and management support.


Dr. McNutt currently serves as a core member of the campus behavioral threat assessment and
management team at UC San Diego with a specialized focus in workplace violence prevention and conducting clinical violence risk assessments. Dr. McNutt is certified through the Department of Homeland Security’s National Threat Evaluation and Reporting Program (DHS-NTER) as a Master Trainer in best practices of behavioral threat assessment and management.
Dr. McNutt is fortunate to have several years of professional experience within a wide variety of clinical settings, including inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care, residential substance abuse and rehabilitation treatment, hospice care, military installation support, and private practice work, during which he provided affiliate EA services to several employers in the San Diego region. In addition to his primary work in employee assistance, Dr. McNutt also serves as an adjunct faculty professor in counseling psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA, while also maintaining ongoing research interests in organizational trauma and workplace violence prevention. Dr. McNutt is fortunate to have served as the president of the San Diego EAPA chapter from 2019 – 2023 and is currently serving his second term as an At-Large Director on the international Board.

a). Describe best practices of behavioral threat assessment when evaluating a potential risk of targeted workplace violence

b). Identify critical risk factors and warning signs indicative of targeted workplace violence

c). Describe effective management strategies for engaging employees of concern who pose a risk of violence
d). Explain examples of organizational interventions EAPs can utilize to support a threat assessment and management process
